New Products for the Win: Mugs
Mugs on mugs on mugs.
I’m sure you’re well aware of my watercolor artwork and prints, but it was time that I expanded my horizons to something else. Mugs!
Coffee is probably one of the few things in my life that I could not live without (Who can, am I right?). Call me a weirdo, but I like using coffee mugs that have a little bit of sass. So when I set out on my first mug designs, I knew I wanted to design something that I would love to own as well.
The first mug design “Busy Hustlin'” actually came by accident. I hand lettered “hustlin” with the initial intention of turning it into another watercolor art piece.
And, it turns out that I am really behind the curve when it comes to creating my own vectors in Adobe Illustrator. I never went to art school, but being self-taught was fine for me. So, I used this opportunity to get in some much needed practice digitizing my work for print. So I scanned it and went at it like a total n00b in AI. Voila! I got a beautiful vector from something I hand lettered! Okay, it wasn’t that quick, but the end result is all that matters.
This got me excited about getting this printed on another medium, and mugs were the obvious choice. Win! Plus, any boss lady knows that the hustle begins with a cup o’ joe in the morning!
The second design came a little easier. The phrase just hit me like a brick wall, and I thought, “This would be perfect on a mug”. Plus, a little mean muggin’ before your morning coffee is totally natural.
So that’s it: the behind-the-scenes story of how I developed my first two mug designs. If you’d like to scoop up one of these mugs (Because, treat yo’self!), they are available here!
If you’re in the San Diego, I’ll be selling both designs at San Diego Made‘s October & December events, First Thursday at the Lafayette. So if you can’t make the October date – don’t fear, I’m going to be there in December too! Details are below:
